Jewellery Cleaning & Care Guide

So you’ve found some beautiful pieces of jewellery, got them home and started wearing them. But how can you make sure your jewellery keeps its sparkle? We recommend getting in touch to get your jewellery professionally cleaned every couple of years, but in the meantime here are some points to bear in mind to keep your jewellery in tip top condition.

What to avoid

It is good practice to remove your jewellery when applying perfumes and beauty products. Applying your jewellery after you get ready is recommended.

Remove your jewellery when cleaning or gardening. Rings and other items can come loose or become damaged when undertaking heavier work, and contact with cleaning products may cause corrosion and tarnishing. Wearing gloves is a good alternative if you would rather keep your jewellery on.

Try not to submerge your jewellery in water for long periods of time, as this can eventually cause items to lose their sparkle and tarnish.

If you swim regularly, try to remove your jewellery as chlorine can damage and tarnish your jewellery.

Storing your jewellery

When you are not wearing your jewellery, it is best to keep it in a safe, soft environment. A good quality jewellery box lined with fabric is perfect. Keep different pieces separate from each other to avoid dinks and scratches, and keep chains fastened to prevent tangling.

Avoid leaving your jewellery in direct sunlight as this can cause damage to metals and your items may discolour.

Leaving jewellery in damp and wet environments such as bathrooms can tarnish and corrode metal and precious stones.
