Lab-Grown vs Natural Diamonds

Lab-Grown vs Natural Diamonds

At Aariya Diamonds, we offer both lab-grown and natural diamonds. This guide explains how they compare, so you can choose with confidence. If you would like to see stones side by side, visit us at our boutique in Hale or at 37 Warstone Lane, Birmingham.

What Is a Lab-Grown Diamond?

A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond. It is made of pure carbon arranged in the same crystal structure as a diamond formed in the earth, so it is chemically, physically and optically the same. The difference is where it forms: a lab-grown diamond is created in a controlled environment over weeks, not deep underground over millions of years.

A lab-grown diamond is not a simulant. Simulants such as cubic zirconia or moissanite are different materials that only look like diamond.

What Is a Natural Diamond?

A natural diamond formed under intense heat and pressure deep within the earth and was brought closer to the surface by geological activity, where it was later mined. Each natural diamond is a product of the earth over a very long period of time, and many people value it for that rarity and history.

Can You Tell Them Apart?

Not by eye. Lab-grown and natural diamonds share the same brilliance, fire and sparkle. Telling them apart requires specialist gemmological equipment. That is why independent certification matters: the grading report confirms whether a diamond is lab-grown or natural.

How Diamonds Are Graded: The 4Cs

Both lab-grown and natural diamonds are graded on the same scale, known as the 4Cs:

  • Cut: how well the diamond's proportions, symmetry and polish return light. Cut has the greatest effect on sparkle.
  • Colour: how colourless the diamond is, graded from D (colourless) through to shades with a visible tint.
  • Clarity: how many natural inclusions or surface marks the diamond has, and how visible they are.
  • Carat: the diamond's weight, which affects its size.

Certification

Our diamonds are certified by the IGI (International Gemological Institute). An IGI report records the diamond's 4Cs and other details, and states whether it is lab-grown or natural. Please ask to see the certificate for any stone you are considering.

Price Differences

In general, a lab-grown diamond costs considerably less than a natural diamond of similar size and grading. Many people choose lab-grown so they can have a larger stone, or a higher grade, within the same budget. Natural diamonds generally cost more because of their rarity.

At Aariya Diamonds, lab-grown diamonds come as standard, and natural diamond prices are available on enquiry. We also offer a price match on a like-for-like basis only.

Durability

Lab-grown and natural diamonds are equally durable. Both are the hardest natural material known, scoring 10 on the Mohs scale, and both are suitable for everyday wear, including engagement rings. As with any fine jewellery, a well-made setting and occasional professional checks help keep your diamond secure.

How to Choose

There is no wrong choice. Both are real diamonds. These questions may help:

  • Budget and size: if you want the largest or highest-grade stone for your budget, lab-grown is often the right fit.
  • Rarity and tradition: if a diamond formed in the earth is important to you, choose natural.
  • Appearance: the two look the same, so choose on cut, colour and clarity, not on origin alone.
  • Certification: whichever you choose, make sure it comes with an independent grading report.

Our team is happy to show you both, with no pressure, so you can compare them in person.
